A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on recently would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
