Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Forged the Modern World
One can find many candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that title should go to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working over 90 days,” writes the author. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, that converted logs into planks using almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic dominance in Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. A single part transformed the rotary movement to vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead one precise increment each stroke.
“Each element was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate them so they operated within a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each descending motion and moving with each upward motion. This constituted a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental components.”
