World Health Organization Issues Warning Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Jabs

Less than a tenth of individuals eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy are able to get them, warns the WHO as it releases its initial guidance on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now classified as obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance acknowledges that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with thorough and lifelong treatment," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are key hurdles to universal access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing significant weight, says the organization.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the current most favorable scenario, the production of GLP-1 therapies might only reach approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the WHO.

The guideline calls on governments and firms to widen access, by approaches like licensing agreements.

A patent on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Work

GLP-1 drugs mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

People usually start to lose weight within a few weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Studies points to people may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the drug, as their typical appetite return.

Being carrying excess weight increases your risk for contracting diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in countries worldwide and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
